WHAT THE PREHISTORIC PAST CAN TEACH US ABOUT BUILDING A GREENER FUTURE
HOW THE PAST SHAPES THE FUTURE
At first glance, it might seem counterintuitive — what could the age of dinosaurs possibly teach us about the future of our planet? But the deep history of Earth holds more than ancient fossils and long-lost creatures; it offers powerful lessons on how we might restore balance to our environment and fight climate change today.
Millions of years ago, Earth was a planet teeming with life on a scale we can barely imagine. Prehistoric animals reached astonishing sizes — Titanoboa, a prehistoric snake, stretched nearly 50 feet long, while the massive Patagotitan mayorum, one of the largest titanosaurs ever discovered, grew to 130 feet and weighed up to 85 tons. While several factors contributed to their immense size, scientists believe higher oxygen levels in the atmosphere played a role.
And those higher oxygen levels? They were made possible by a planet richly covered in plant life. Estimates suggest that around 85% of Earth’s surface was blanketed in greenery during the age of dinosaurs. From towering ferns to sprawling forests, prehistoric vegetation didn’t just support animal life — it shaped the very air.
That’s where we can learn something vital: plant life is one of the most powerful tools we have to combat climate change. Plants absorb carbon dioxide, improve air quality, restore biodiversity, and cool rising global temperatures. The more green space we restore, the more we can help our planet heal.
At Project Pangaea, we believe in looking to the past to imagine a better future. A future where cities are designed with nature in mind, where rewilded forests and regreened neighborhoods support thriving ecosystems, and where humans and wildlife coexist in harmony.
That’s why we support organizations like Re:wild, which are working to return our world to its former, greener glory. By protecting and restoring wild spaces, we’re not just preserving history — we’re shaping the future.
Let’s reimagine Earth not as a planet we must save from destruction, but as one we can restore, together — by taking our cue from the vibrant, life-filled world that came before us.
